Fife Freecycle Cafe

When wanted, received, taken and offered just aren't enough!!

hi there
in recent weeks the guidelines for freecycle has changed, you cant advertise the same item within 31days,you cant put recieved post on and constantly get picked up on not putting area your in or mail to long winded....
On checking freecycle again this evening on all three groups i noticed all of the above on postings.... they got through our moderators.
Are the rules different on the groups? or is it up to moderators.?
I would have gone for blue stair carpet but have no idea where it is ....

I personal say it is down to the mods but i believe all the freecycle fife group are trying to tow the line and all have the same rules, That was the last thing i heard about the fife mods. but maybe one of the fife mod can comfirm this action

Hoenstly havent heard anything like this except on the Perth site. I hope you can still reoffer an item within that time otherwise what happens when you have a no show?

I agree that when no location is added it is very offputting. I normally skip those.

i think some moderators add in areas if u a regular and they remember you, others just send it back.

That's the crux of it richard!

i'm speaking as a mod for central Fife and standby mod for west here...we do ask for wants not to be repeated for at least a month. You would not believe how often people just keep posting wanted posts every second day. These are filtered out before they get to the board, otherwise everyone would be complaining about that!

The location is important, we have had complaints about a member from Milton Keynes collecting items on a UK grand tour. It makes sense really, if you see someone wants something and although pick up is there responsibility, I do think people are more likely to respond to a want if it is a local member.

Sometimes repeated posts do slip through, all the mods are volunteers and have other family/ work commitments. we do try to nip onto freecycle seveal times a day so posts aren't waiting too long before being uploaded and in a hurry, things get missed. We realistically can't check back on every post so its ones that stick in our mind that tend to get picked up.

Anyway, kids are in bed, so I'm here with a wee glass of red wine beside me for the next hour so shout up if you want a moderator's take on anything :)

I should have made it clear, if someone is reoffering due to a no show as Linda highlights, thats fine. The 31 days rule is really aimed at wanted posts, although repeated unlikely offers would get also get pulled. I do remember last year someone trying to post a bottle of shampoo 3/4 full on a daily basis!

Just to clarify a few things: received posts are only for members who put a Wanted post and got the item they asked for. Putting your area in the subject line is important, and finally rules are rules, it's not a question of "picking on" anyone. We are grown ups, this is not a school playground! In West Fife Freecycle we have really tried hard to be consistent, as it helps everyone make the best, easiest use of this fantastic idea that Freecycle is. Unfortunately different groups have different owners with different ideas about detailed rules, but the basic principles are the same. Just remember why these groups exist, they are ultimately there for the good of everyone, so with some good will, let's make it work! Rant over ;-)

I'm not sure I agree with the rule about re-advertising either. If someone hasn't replied within a couple of days, then you generally wont get a reply any later on in the month - sorry if I'm mistaken here, but that's always been the case when I have offered stuff. If I'm clearing out and have stuff lying around too long it usually works its way back into the house (usually the kids ;) ) so if I can't re-offer it, it will more than likely end up at the tip.

Could someone maybe clarify if it's ok to add things that you have already offered into another message offering new items? Eg if I was offering toys one day and no one replied and the next day I was offering clothes, could I add the toys into the clothes message?
